To kick off the Motoneuron Meeting 2010 with a bang (or should we say, a pop!), it is our great pleasure to invite all our guests to a Welcome Cocktail in the magnificent building of the headquarters of the Paris Descartes University (12 rue de l'école de médecine, 75006 Paris), on Friday, July 9th at 6:30pm.

This building, in the “greek style” in vogue during the reign of Louis XV, was erected between 1769 and 1774. It was designed to accommodate the “Royal Collège of Surgery”. It remained the location of the medical school until 1950, when it was transferred to rue des Saints-Pères (where the meeting is taking place.)

Friday sessions are scheduled to end at 6:15pm. We will leave all together and walk (1km, 0.7mi, about 10 min.) to the Galerie Saint-Germain as a group (see map). Guests are encouraged to join us at the meeting building entrance, or find their way on their own to the cocktail location.

The cocktail will start at 7pm with a short speech from our hosts:

Enjoy the rest of the evening to mingle leisurely with a drink in one hand and some "petits fours" in the other.

The cocktail will end around 8:30pm.

Medical history museum

The building also houses the medical history museum of the university Paris Descartes, which displays the oldest collection of surgical instruments and other medical artifacts in Europe.

As a special favor to us, the curator of the museum, Ms. Clin, will take little groups on special guided tours.

Gala dinner on the Eiffel tower - Gustave Eiffel Ballroom - Monday, July 12th 2010

This year, we have a special treat for you: the gala dinner, on Monday, July 12th, will be taking place on the first level of the Eiffel tower, in the Gustave Eiffel ballroom.

We will enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view from the first level, a splendid buffet dinner, and a relaxing Jazz band. We hope that everyone have a good time, in an friendly atmosphere. Casual attire is recommended.

This dinner is opened to everyone registered to the meeting, including guests (spouses, children, friends) as long as they have been registered. As the website did not allow to specify the number of guests, if you are bringing more than one guest, please email us as soon as possible to let us know how many you will be.

How to get there

To make the trip to the Eiffel tower as quick and painless as possible, we have arranged for special transportation by bus and private elevators.

It is therefore critical that everyone regroup in front of the meeting building at 5:30pm. We will personally escort those attending the meeting on Monday, but it is imperative that the guests who wish to join us meet us in front of the building and leave with the buses. (see map).

Everyone will be shuttled in small groups of about 50 people. Once at the foot of the Eiffel tower, we will be shown to a private elevator to take us to the Gustave Eiffel Ballroom. Two members of the organizing committee will be accompanying each group. They will be in charge of escorting everyone safely, but cannot keep an eye on each and everyone, so please stay with the group until you reach the ballroom.

Note that bags will be subjected to search. Suitcases larger that carry on bags will not be allowed.

On the first level

Once you've been safely taken to the first level of the Eiffel tower, you are free to enjoy the view as much as you like. The Gustave Eiffel ballroom is located between the North and East pillars, and signage will help you locate it through the crowd.

Throughout the night, you are free to come and go from the Gustave Eiffel ballroom, but you cannot take your drinks outside with you. Finally, for security reason, we ask that everyone, including guests, wear their meeting badge. Blank badges will be provided for guests.

At the end of the night

The Eiffel tower closes at midnight. We have not provided ways for you to go back to your hotel, but the Eiffel tower is well serviced with public transportation.

Here are a few ways to go back to the meeting area:
Take the RER C. The metro station "Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel" is located nearby. Take the RER line C direction "Juvisy-sur-Orge" and get off either at the station "Musée d'Orsay" or "Saint-Michel Notre-Dame". These stations are nearby many of the hotels. You can also transfer to the metro line 4 from "Saint-Michel Notre-Dame". The last train leave at 12:18am from the Eiffel tower.
Take the Bus 72. The bus stop "Pont d'Iena" is located on the other side of the Seine river, straight across from the Eiffel tower. Take the bus 72 direction "Hotel de Ville" and get off at "Quai François Mitterrand". This bus stop is located near the Louvre, just across the Seine river from the meeting building. The last bus leaves at 12:20am from "Pont d'Iena".
The simplest way might also be to share a cab!

Young Researchers Party

Come and meet in a relaxed atmosphere the people that will be the experts in the field of motor control and motoneuron research tomorrow (in other words, us, the young researchers!).

We are delighted to host the Youg Researchers Party which will take place Sunday, July 11th at 7pm, at the Tribar (20 rue de Lappe, 75011 Paris, France). Undergrads, Grad students, post-docs and young investigator are welcome. 120 persons are expected!

How to get there?

The Tribar [1] is located in a very trendy spot in Paris, "la Bastille". Getting there is easy from anywhere in Paris, the metro station Bastille is on the lines (1) and (5).

For instance, here are 2 ways to get there from the conference building:
take the subway at the station "Saint Germain des Prés" (line 4), direction "Porte de Clignancourt". Get off at the station "Chatelet" and transfert (Correspondance) to the line 1, direction "Porte de Vincennes". Get off at "Bastille".
OR, take the bus (number 86) on the boulevard Saint-Germain, and get off at the station Bastille-Faubourg Saint-Antoine.

What is included?

The Tribar is a bar, a restaurant and a nightclub, all at once.

We'll kick off the evening with an "apéritif" (a starter drink) and then move on to a full blown buffet diner (3 starters, 3 main courses, 3 desserts, accompanied by wine and water). When you're full, get your groove on on the dance floor, or enjoy your conversation with a complimentary cocktail.

Included in the registration fees are:

cover for the night club.

Extra drinks will be available at the bar for 5-10€. Happy hour will run from 6:30 to 11:30pm.

But Sunday is the soccer World Cup final!

Don't worry, we've thought about soccer fans! The final will be shown on 3 TVs screens. The final starts at 8:30pm local time.

If you've included one or several guests when registering for the meeting, your guests are automatically invited to the young researchers party! So please bring them with you. The more, the merrier! There will be plenty of fun to be had, for scientists and non-scientists alike.

By Air

From Charles de Gaulle Airport: : Buy a RER ticket and take line B into Paris. Disembark at the St. Michel station and transfer to the metro, line 4 in the direction Porte d'Orléans, using your RER ticket. After two stops get off, at the Saint Germain des Prés station, and take the right exit. See below for directions from the metro station.
From Orly Airport: : Get an Orlyval ticket, valid also for the RER and Metro, and take the Orlyval shuttle train to Antony. Transfer to the RER train into Paris and disembark at the Station St. Michel. Here take metro line 4 in the direction Porte de Orléans. After two stops get off, at the Saint Germain des Prés station, and take the right exit. See below for directions from the metro station.

From Gare du Nord: : Take the metro line 4 in the direction Porte d'Orléans. Get off at the station Saint Germain des Prés and take the right exit. See below for directions from the metro station.

Look for the café Les Deux Magots and walk in that direction along the Boulevard saint Germain. After approx. 200 meters/yards turn right into the rue des Saints Pères. The university is the big Building at your right hand side.
